Terms of Service
Last updated 30 September 2026
These Terms govern your use of Starta Africa ("Starta", "we", "us"), a donation-based crowdfunding platform for African manufacturing projects ("Startas"), currently open to projects in Nigeria. By creating an account or making a donation you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
1. Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter a binding contract to use Starta. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide and for keeping your login credentials secure.
We may suspend or close accounts that breach these Terms or that we reasonably suspect of fraud.
2. Donation-based crowdfunding
Contributions made on Starta are donations. They are not loans, investments, equity, securities or purchases. Donors do not receive shares, interest, profit, repayment or any financial return, and no Starta may promise one.
We do not guarantee that any Starta will reach its goal or complete its project.
3. How funds are handled
Starta receives and manages every donation made to a Starta. Donations are not paid to founders, and founders will never be asked to provide bank details to receive them.
Starta applies the funds raised to setting up the project described in the Starta, such as acquiring equipment, premises and the services needed to begin operations.
Once setup is complete, a specialised team headed by the founder who submitted the Starta is put in place to manage the company. Starta may continue to oversee how funds are applied until setup is complete.
4. Creating a Starta
Founders who create a Starta agree that:
- all information and documents submitted are true, complete and not misleading;
- they have the right to raise funds for the project described;
- donations are received and managed by Starta, not paid to them, as described below;
- they will work with Starta and, after setup, lead the team that manages the company;
- they will keep Donors reasonably informed of progress; and
- they will comply with all applicable laws, including tax obligations on funds received.
Every Starta is reviewed before it goes live. We may approve, reject, pause or remove a Starta at our discretion, including where we suspect fraud or a breach of these Terms.
5. Payments
Donations are processed in Nigerian Naira (NGN) by our payment partner, Paystack. By donating you also agree to Paystack's terms. Starta does not store your full card details.
A Starta platform fee (currently 10% of the donation) is added at checkout and shown before you pay. The fee supports running the platform and is not credited to the Starta's total.
A donation is only recorded once Paystack confirms the payment was successful.
6. Refunds
Because donations are gifts, they are generally non-refundable. We will consider refund requests where a payment was made in error, was unauthorised, or where a Starta is removed for fraud or a serious breach of these Terms.
To request a refund, contact us within 30 days of the donation with your payment reference. Approved refunds are returned to the original payment method.
7. Acceptable use
You must not use Starta to:
- raise funds for anything illegal, deceptive or unrelated to the stated project;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation;
- launder money or finance terrorism;
- upload malware, or attempt to access accounts or data that are not yours; or
- interfere with the security or normal operation of the platform.
8. Content and intellectual property
You keep ownership of content you upload, but grant Starta a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display and promote it in connection with the platform. The Starta name, logo and site design belong to Starta Africa.
9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
Starta is provided "as is". We review Startas but cannot verify every statement a founder makes, and we do not guarantee project outcomes.
To the extent permitted by law, Starta is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losses arising from a founder's acts or omissions. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the platform fees (if any) we received in connection with the relevant donation.
10. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes we will notify you by email or on the site. Continuing to use Starta after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Disputes will be resolved by the courts of Nigeria, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer rights you may have.
